“How do they work?”
All search engines have 3 major parts:
1. A Spider (crawler) visits a web page, reads it, and then follows links to other pages within the site. Whatever spider finds is being taken to the second part: “Index”
2. An Index is like a huge library containing a copy of every web page that the spider finds. If a web page changes, then the library is updated with new information.
3. Search engine software is the third element of a search engine. It is a program that goes through all the pages recorded in the index and finds matches to a search and ranks them in order of what it believes is most relevant.
That is why the same search on different search engines often produces different results
